Choose Collaborative Divorce. The better way to maintain healthy family relationships

 What is Collaborative Divorce?

Collaborative Divorce is a way to separate or end a marriage without going to court. You and your spouse each hire a lawyer trained in collaborative practice. Everyone meets and works together to solve issues like parenting, money, and property in a respectful, cooperative way. In this process, your lawyers agree not to take your case to court.

How does the Collaborative Divorce process work?

You and your spouse sign a Participation Agreement that says all of you will work together to settle your issues without going to court. Each of you has your own collaborative lawyer who helps you talk through problems and make decisions. The meetings are private, and you may bring in other experts (like financial or parenting specialists) if needed.

What are the benefits of choosing Collaborative Divorce?

Collaborative Divorce often costs less and takes less time than a court battle. Because the focus is on cooperation, it can lower stress and help keep better relationships, especially if you’ll be co-parenting. You also have more control over the decisions because you make the agreements together, not a judge.

Is Collaborative Divorce right for every couple?

Collaborative Divorce works best when both partners can communicate respectfully and honestly, and when there isn’t a history of serious conflict like family violence. Both people must agree to the process. If you can’t agree or one person wants to go to court, the collaborative process ends and you must hire new lawyers to continue.

How to Select a Collaborative Professional

Review the collaborative professional’s profile. Once you have identified the professionals who are a fit for your situation, schedule a consultation to determine if you have the right collaborative professional.

Below are tips for selecting a professional:
  • Ask the Collaborative Professional about their Collaborative training and experience.
  • Discuss the issues that exist in your situation.
  • Ask about the Collaborative team and their recommendations for names of specific collaborative divorce professionals that can represent the other party.
  • Select a Collaborative professional who answers your questions and gives you confidence in their qualifications for helping you to achieve a respectful, constructive and efficient outcome.
Our firm offers Collaborative Divorce services through four trained collaborative family lawyers: Adam Letourneau, K.C., Tamera Topou, Bradley Bullock and Emily Tilleman-Gatz. Each of them is experienced in helping separating couples resolve parenting, financial, and property issues without going to court. They focus on respectful communication, practical solutions, and reducing conflict, while protecting your legal rights throughout the collaborative process.
